Recent research in canine cognition has provided valuable insight into how dogs perceive, remember, and interact with their environment. This talk will focus on research studies related to long-term canine memory, highlighting the role of individual personality differences in problem-solving performance, and the understanding of object permanence abilities in dogs. Speaker Bios: Dawn K. Melzer Ph.D. Professor of Psychology at Sacred Heart University Dr. Melzer’s research is focused on cognitive and comparative psychology in canines, young children, and marine mammals. Along with her colleague, Dr. Deirdre Yeater, Dr. Melzer runs the Canine Cognition Lab at Sacred Heart University where pet owners and their dogs participate in studies investigating canine cognition and she also coordinates the service dog training program and therapy dog research projects in collaboration with Dr. Yeater and The Exceptional Sidekick Service Dogs in Newtown, CT. Deirdre B. Yeater, Ph.D. Chair/Professor of Psychology at Sacred Heart University Dr. Yeater’s research has been in the areas of comparative cognition and conservation psychology. She has studied a wide variety of species include several species of dolphins, belugas, dogs, river otters, and preschool children. Free to attend; a suggested $15 donation is appreciated.
